Jettaje 'stu core mio 'mmiez' a la strata
E 'ncopp'a 'na muntagna mme ne jette
E, pe' 'na passiona disperata,
Monaco 'e San Francisco mme facette.

– Tuppe-tù! – Chi è?
– Ccà ce stess'uno
Ca ll'è caduto 'o core 'mmiez' â via?
– Bella figliò, ccà nun ce sta nisciuno,
Va', jatevenne cu Gesù e Maria!

Se ne jette cantanno: "Ammore, ammore,
Cchiù nun te vò zi' monaco vicino!"
E p' 'a muntagna se purtaje 'stu core,
Arravugliato dint' ô mantesino.

I threw out my heart into the street
And I went on the mountain
And because of hopeless passion
I became a Franciscan monk.

– Knock-knock! – Who is there?
– Is here that man
Who has left his heart on the street?
– Beautiful girl, there's nobody here,
Go away with Jesus and Maria!

She went away, singing: "Love, love,
The monk doesn't love you more!"
And my heart rolled on the mountain,
Wrapped in her apron.
